We Demand Comics is a one-day convention where authors, artists and fans celebrate the intersections of science fiction, fantasy, and horror in prose and comics. The convention is a collaboration between the Brooklyn Speculative Fiction Writers (BSWF) &
Anyone Comics.
50% of Ticket Sales go to the Octavia Project to help them in their mission: using speculative fiction as a lens through which young girls and non-binary teens get to envision new futures and greater possibilities for our world; blending creative writing, art, science, and technology.
100% of book sales go to the authors and creatives.
The artists take a piece of prose from one of our guest authors and sketches it live for the audience while in discussion about their process for interpreting the written word into images.

While the categories stay the same, the stories that represent the popular fiction driving them have not. Why? Are the readers who made them popular aging out or moving on? What do creatives do differently when they cross into different age groups and media? We'll talk to creatives who have successfully crossed streams.

Folklore in Comics and Prose. For many writers, folklore, family legends, monsters, and cultural myths carried across oceans and generations are the deep well from which we drink. How they resurface, transform, and get reinterpreted fuels some of the richest prose and comics being made today.

Horror as a genre is more popular than it has ever been, thriving across multiple mediums, from prose and poetry to comics and film. Each medium uses its inherent strengths to scare and fascinate us in equal measure. What sorts of effects can be pulled off in one medium that are more challenging in others? What aspects of the genre are uniquely suited for comics?

We Demand Comics is excited to partner with R. Sikoryak to bring you the grand finale of We Demand Comics: The BSFW Comics Carousel. Comic artists from the BSFW community will take the stage and bring their work to life, pairing live narration with music, sound effects— telling stories that swing from autobiographical to historical, philosophical to fanciful, usually with a good dose of humor.

The Octavia Project Summer Camp is a FREE summer camp based in Brooklyn for young women and trans, nonbinary, and/or gender non-conforming youth who will be in grades 6-8 next school year. Together we will create, explore, build, and have FUN in daily workshops that combine science, tech, art, and writing. We’ll also go on field trips that explore art & STEM in NYC. Whether you like to write stories, draw comics, or game, the Octavia Project welcomes you!
In addition to supporting the Octavia Project financially, we also run Constellation: a one-on-one mentorship for NYC girls and non-binary teens interested in writing speculative fiction and comics.

About BSFW
With nearly two hundred members and growing, BSFW has become the largest, most active, and diverse fantasy, science fiction, and horror writing community in New York City. Our members are also avid comic fans. Since 2010 we have conducted over six hundred meetings and events including:
